I feel fortunate in my teaching career because I have worked in schools where original research by Teachers was normal, and celebrated. Our Mr Ricketts is studying a Masters degree in which his original research is examining the way effective Teachers’ learning relationships with their students is created and maintained. In other words, how do effective Teachers manage learning relationships with their students? Mr Ricketts’ research, in its early days has been presented to our Teachers, and we look forward to further details from him as his work progresses. This is the type of benefit that comes from original research – you never really know what the end results will be, and it can often surprise with its breadth or depth of meaning and importance, especially in school education. In senior Science studies, students are asked to conduct ‘EEIs’, that is, ‘Extended Experimental Investigation’. In most Queensland schools the Year 11 EEI provides students with a limited range of research questions to investigate, usually drawn from a single unit (eg plants). This allows students to focus on the process and techniques of investigation and the subsequent reporting. However, in Year 12 students are often given freedom to choose a topic or research question from the work covered over the whole of the course.
